*DISSECTING SENATOR ODUAH’S BILL ON ENCOURAGING MULTINATIONALS AND OTHER COMPANIES IN PARTICIPATING IN COPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY(CSR)*

*DISSECTING SENATOR ODUAH’S BILL ON ENCOURAGING MULTINATIONALS AND OTHER COMPANIES IN PARTICIPATING IN COPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY(CSR)*

This motion, set in motion by the distinguished senator is simply about these large corporates and multinationals being mandated to stand out in a positive light, they need to implement and commit to a program of social responsibility that will aid their host communities. The need to take a step further and address some of the social amenities in their host communities for peaceful relationship opposed to the exemplary ensuing battle in the niger delter today where the kidnap of expatriates comes common.

Many multinationals and organisations have engaged in just giving out to charity as seen in our country today, but CSR is now more than simply giving to charity; it is meant to become an integral part of how these organizations run their business and focus on consumers’ perceptions of company governance, the company’s positive influence on society and the way in which it treats its employees. It further involves how the company behaves ethically, conducts business fairly, operates transparently, protects the environment and supports worthy causes. Especially given the dangers these companies pose in their host communities where they often pollute their air, water, land, farmlands etc and care less to address the hazard even when they earn huge revenue to the detriment of their host communities. But there is more to this which this bill tends to address. CSR should also be based on supporting environmental changes or developing programs to help people from the the communities of their location or the country at large. They should be mandated to have more CSR programs that will be impactful and have a hugely positive effect on indegenous staff and local communities. The bill will further compel corporate organizations and multinationals to engage in compensating host communities for any environmental hazard their activities inflict on their communities and engage the youths of the communities through employment, scholarship programs and other empowerment programs that will benefit the youths of the said areas of situation.

With this motion brought to bare, it will with out doubt achieve a positive impact on society as a whole while maximising the creation of shared value for the owners of the business, its employees, shareholders, stakeholders and the host communities. It will further help foster peaceful coexistence between the host communities and the companies or multinationals, enhancing public trust, making the organization a more attractive prospect for employees. It will lead to more engaged employees from host communities and ultimately have a positive impact on the organization’s bottom line.

GIVE RECOGNITION TO ANAMBRA AND KOGI AS OIL PRODUCING STATES; SENATOR ODUAH PROPOSES AT RED CHAMBERS VIA BILL.

GIVE RECOGNITION TO ANAMBRA AND KOGI AS OIL PRODUCING STATES; SENATOR ODUAH PROPOSES AT RED CHAMBERS VIA BILL.

This bill proposed by the most distinguished senator princess Adaeze Stella Oduah is based on the need to give recognition to Anambra and Kogi as oil producing states and to forestall further hostilities between the warring communities of Odeke Echeno, located in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State and Enugu- Otu Aguleri and Eziagulu – Otu Communities in Anambra East Local Government Areas of Anambra State.

The dispute which follows President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of Anambra as an oil producing state is currently generating controversy in neighbouring States of Kogi and Anambra. Findings at the National Boundary Commission (NBC) revealed that the boundary between Anambra and Kogi States was last delineated in 1924 during the colonial era, and therefore calls for a fresh survey.

Unable to turn a blind eye to the on going tension and blood shed among the communities occupying the corridors of this epicenter of new oil discovery, senator Oduah has arisen this bill in an effort to bring equity and fair sharing to these communities while promoting peace between them as well. This ongoing saga has claimed quite a number of lives, innocents not being an exception. This thus begs the need for the Federal Government to be fully involved in this crises. They must settle this dispute by having a survey carried out to determine the rightful owners of the land as the natural landmarks like hills and Iroko trees are not sufficient enough to determine such a sensitive matter especially now that oil is involved for peace to reign among these torn communities and bring to a halt their quest for oil dominance in this ever growing squabble.

This plight observed by the Senator has caused her to give a voice not just to her own people but to all the affected areas and thus move for the Federal governments intervention in this brewing matter. Princess Stella Oduah since assuming her role as the voice of Anambra North senatorial district, has shown to not just take biase to her people but has also been seen to be the voice of the voiceless across the nation, as her bills have so far suggested.

UNDERSTANDING SENATOR ODUAH’S NYSC BILL

UNDERSTANDING SENATOR ODUAH’S NYSC BILL

The distinguished Senator Stella Oduah sponsored a Bill on NYSC tagged:

NYSC Act (Amendment) Bill 2017
“An Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act, CAP. N84 LFN, 2004 to provide for free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills by corps members, and for such related matters.”
This bill presented by the senator was designed to curtail the rising unemployment rate among the youths by empowering them through various forms of skill acquisition that suits their respective passions. The Bill is at the committee stage awaiting Public Hearing.

It’s no news that yearly, hundreds of Nigerian youths are pushed into the labour market after one year compulsory national youth service. These young people are paid stipends that isn’t enough to establish nor save for life after the service scheme, irrespective of the harsh labour market that awaits them upon completion. They, like their predecessors join the long queue of unemployed youths seeking employment in our already saturated labour market. Many have no choice but to fall into odd jobs to put irregular meals on their tables. An excruciating resultant factor, after spending long years in school and funded all these years. It’s a sore sight.

Senator Stella Oduah identified these challenges plaguing the youths and nation at large. In consonance with her passion and vision for the youths, she proposed this bill to compel the federal government to include skill acquisition programmes fully funded for the youths to diversify their options by learning different skills of interest, ranging from fashion and designing to make-up artistry, music, movies, catering, et cetera. This will traditionally prepare and equip the youths for life after their service year. This will in turn result to high reduction in number of unemployed youths as many will diversify into various skills they’ve acquired during the period of their service year. This will further bring about an increased number of entrepreneurs resulting to more job creations and ultimately a vibrant economy.

This is in tandem with the vision and passion of our dear Senator who has repeatedly demonstrated her love for the youths. A passion she has consistently demonstrated by empowering youths from various communities across her district, making them self sufficient and employers of labour.

When this Bill is passed, our National Youths Service will not just be a one year serve and leave term, but an avenue to imbue entrepreneurial skills on the youths that pass through this scheme. Thus building a future anchored on potential entrepreneurs that will be future employers of labour seen in developed countries. The benefits of this bill can not be overstated.

Anambra North is blessed to have a visionary leader like our indefatigable Senator Omueze, Adaezechukwu na eme ogo, whose leadership has continued to impact the lives of many especially the youths.

It can only get better for ndi Anambra North under her leadership.
