*DISSECTING SENATOR ODUAH’S BILL ON ENCOURAGING MULTINATIONALS AND OTHER COMPANIES IN PARTICIPATING IN COPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY(CSR)*

This motion, set in motion by the distinguished senator is simply about these large corporates and multinationals being mandated to stand out in a positive light, they need to implement and commit to a program of social responsibility that will aid their host communities. The need to take a step further and address some of the social amenities in their host communities for peaceful relationship opposed to the exemplary ensuing battle in the niger delter today where the kidnap of expatriates comes common.

Many multinationals and organisations have engaged in just giving out to charity as seen in our country today, but CSR is now more than simply giving to charity; it is meant to become an integral part of how these organizations run their business and focus on consumers’ perceptions of company governance, the company’s positive influence on society and the way in which it treats its employees. It further involves how the company behaves ethically, conducts business fairly, operates transparently, protects the environment and supports worthy causes. Especially given the dangers these companies pose in their host communities where they often pollute their air, water, land, farmlands etc and care less to address the hazard even when they earn huge revenue to the detriment of their host communities. But there is more to this which this bill tends to address. CSR should also be based on supporting environmental changes or developing programs to help people from the the communities of their location or the country at large. They should be mandated to have more CSR programs that will be impactful and have a hugely positive effect on indegenous staff and local communities. The bill will further compel corporate organizations and multinationals to engage in compensating host communities for any environmental hazard their activities inflict on their communities and engage the youths of the communities through employment, scholarship programs and other empowerment programs that will benefit the youths of the said areas of situation.

With this motion brought to bare, it will with out doubt achieve a positive impact on society as a whole while maximising the creation of shared value for the owners of the business, its employees, shareholders, stakeholders and the host communities. It will further help foster peaceful coexistence between the host communities and the companies or multinationals, enhancing public trust, making the organization a more attractive prospect for employees. It will lead to more engaged employees from host communities and ultimately have a positive impact on the organization’s bottom line.
