This bill proposed by the most distinguished senator princess Adaeze Stella Oduah is based on the need to give recognition to Anambra and Kogi as oil producing states and to forestall further hostilities between the warring communities of Odeke Echeno, located in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State and Enugu- Otu Aguleri and Eziagulu – Otu Communities in Anambra East Local Government Areas of Anambra State.
The dispute which follows President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of Anambra as an oil producing state is currently generating controversy in neighbouring States of Kogi and Anambra. Findings at the National Boundary Commission (NBC) revealed that the boundary between Anambra and Kogi States was last delineated in 1924 during the colonial era, and therefore calls for a fresh survey.
Unable to turn a blind eye to the on going tension and blood shed among the communities occupying the corridors of this epicenter of new oil discovery, senator Oduah has arisen this bill in an effort to bring equity and fair sharing to these communities while promoting peace between them as well. This ongoing saga has claimed quite a number of lives, innocents not being an exception. This thus begs the need for the Federal Government to be fully involved in this crises. They must settle this dispute by having a survey carried out to determine the rightful owners of the land as the natural landmarks like hills and Iroko trees are not sufficient enough to determine such a sensitive matter especially now that oil is involved for peace to reign among these torn communities and bring to a halt their quest for oil dominance in this ever growing squabble.
This plight observed by the Senator has caused her to give a voice not just to her own people but to all the affected areas and thus move for the Federal governments intervention in this brewing matter. Princess Stella Oduah since assuming her role as the voice of Anambra North senatorial district, has shown to not just take biase to her people but has also been seen to be the voice of the voiceless across the nation, as her bills have so far suggested.
