Ogbaru LGA is one of the riverine areas in Anambra North Senatorial Zone, with about 12 of its communities sharing boundaries with the River Niger. Owing to its unique geographical position, Ogbaru LGA is faced with coastal degradation, and encroachment by the River Niger which has led to loss of property worth millions of naira.
This environmental problem extends from Ogbaru Urban; Odorubber axis to Ogwuikpelle community, which happens to be the most hit by the natural hazard.
On assumption of office, Senator Stella Oduah moved a motion calling for immediate government attention on the coastal erosion ravaging her zone.
In her usual pragmatic manner, she embarked on measures to control the encroachment of Ogbaru communities by the River Niger. This involved the use of biological methods to prevent the erosion from wearing out the river bank, through planting of deep and large rooted tree species like bamboo, teak,Opepe around the boundary of the River Niger with Ogbaru communities. More than 5000 tree seedlings were planted in all the communities of Ogbaru.
This is the first time harmonised ecological methods are being employed in the area of erosion control in Ogbaru, and Stella Oduah is the first senator from the area to embark on such a project.
Indeed, Senator Stella Oduah is a blessing to her constituency and a Gold Anambra North cannot afford to lose while picking stones, for she is the best senator the zone has ever produced.
