The distinguished Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Princess Stella Oduah has moved a motion to arrest the annual flooding which displaces residents of riverine areas during rainy season which is greeted with increased in volume of water, this affect about 70% of the land area of Anambra north senatorial zone.
In her motion, the legislator drew the attention of the members of the red chamber to the annual flooding in Nigeria especially from the release of water from larger Dam in neighbouring African countries, which have caused avoidable loss of lives and properties. Adding that the flood disaster have worsen the crises of the internally displaced persons concerned, she further state that this perennial flooding have over the years caused wide spread and irreparable damage to the ecosystem along the parted areas.
Adjacent to colossal loss of lives and properties caused by this flood disaster, Senator Stella Oduah pointed that the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) estimated the annual loss at the average of N2.6tn from 2012 floods alone and money spent has gone in the neighborhood of N600m for every community that this has occurred. The legislator who frowned at the rate of spendings on relocating and managing peoples displaced by this flooding state that such funds would have been directed into development of several dams across the country to aid management of the excess water during the wet season.
The Senator, urged the federal government to convey stakeholder meetings to curb this reoccurring situation with a view to providing a lasting solution to flood disaster. Adding that the floral flood introduce several strange vegetations that not only shock the native floral but are usually difficult to control. And this flood have over the years resulted in the permanent devastation of vast stretches of land nationwide.
There are indications that the flood are implicated in the emergence of strange illness and diseases resulting in an unknown medical conditions that have defiled and could defiled available medical intervention. Thereby urging the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to revisit the proposed construction of Davin Hausa Dam and other smaller dams as the case may be. Princess Stella Oduah in her statement commended NEMA, PCFR and other relevant agencies of the organization and individuals whose effort in creating awareness has led to the reduction of casualties to the minimal level.
Considering her constant efforts to ensure the people of Anambra North have a feel of the government, the legislator said it is always a nightmare to some of us living in the riverine areas in Anambra north that every six months we have to look for where to accommodate ourselves. And we get comfortable with annual loss of lives and properties are lost.
